The difference that matters
An escalator
is not a lift
Most contractors treat escalators as a line item under lifts. They behave nothing alike, and maintaining them as if they did is how equipment fails in public.
The duty cycle is brutal. A lift makes a few hundred trips a day and rests between them. An escalator in a mall runs continuously for the whole trading day, carrying people who are standing still and leaning on the handrail. Everything wears faster — steps, chains, handrails, comb plates and the drive itself.
It fails in public. When a lift breaks, most people in the building never know. When an escalator stops, it stops in the middle of a concourse, with a queue forming behind it — and in a retail or transport environment, that is a visible operational problem the moment it happens.
Public safety exposure is different. Escalators carry children, trolleys, luggage and people who are not paying attention. Foreign objects, damaged comb plates and worn step edges are the incidents that become reports, and they are almost always preventable through routine inspection rather than repair.
Cleaning is part of maintenance. Debris in the step band, grit in the handrail entry and spillage around the comb plate accelerate wear more than traffic does. A serious escalator programme includes cleaning and inspection as scheduled work — not as an afterthought when something jams.
